Love Language – 5 Ways to Create a Connection
In 1995, Gary Chapman published “The Five Love Languages” outlining five ways to express and experience love that he calls “love languages”. They are: receiving gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service (devotion) and physical touch.
The book has been on the New York Times Best Seller list since August 2009 and in it, Chapman suggests that to discover another person’s love language, one must observe the way they express love to others, analyze what they complain about most often, and what they request from their significant other most often. He theorizes that people tend to naturally give love in the way that they prefer to receive love.
Through learning someone’s love language, it helps create a connection with people whom you love and with those you would like to know better. There is a very simple online questionnaire that determines a primary and a secondary love language – click here.
A more in depth description of the five love languages:
- Receiving Gifts – For some people, what makes them feel most loved is to receive a gift.
The most important thing to keep in mind about this love language is that the gift need not be expensive or elaborate – gifts that are unique and memorable are what matters most.
- Quality Time – This language is all about giving the other person your undivided attention.

- Words of Affirmation – This language uses words to affirm other people.
One of my favorite sites, Pinterest, has some lovely examples of Words of Affirmation.
- Acts of Service (devotion) – For these people, actions speak louder than words.
Here are 10 Acts of Service to Make Your Partner Feel Loved (and they are VERY simple)!
- Physical Touch – To this person, nothing speaks more deeply than appropriate touch.

Learning these love languages will greatly improve all of your relationships. It’s also an ice-breaker when you meet someone when you casually ask ,“Do you happen to know what your love language is?” The simple online quiz takes just a few minutes and can easily start a conversation.
Up next week: #4 Curious Questions
Have you ever heard that questions denote interest? Next week we will talk about how to connect with someone based on the way they use language (do they use the word think or the word feel?), how to phrase a great question and anchoring your words with touch.
See you here next week or at an upcoming event. If you have an event topic you would like to share, please let us know!
